En esta tercera publicación dedicada al reporte Shaping the Future of Construction, exploraremos el marco de transformación de la industria planteado por el reporte. Éste considera numerosos casos internacionales de instituciones que están liderando el cambio (recomiendo leerlo ya que es inspirador) sin embargo en este post considero ejemplos de instituciones peruanas que desde sus trincheras están contribuyendo positivamente con la industria.
Cachivachero; “coloquial adjective used in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Peru that refers to those people who gather useless things”, according to the Real Academia de la Lengua. Maybe I should add that those could be unnecessary stuffs but surely of sentimental value.
We usually associate that term with grandparents or even mothers. It seems that the younger, the most eager to gather things. In my personal experience, every now and then I apply Seiri to my own life so as to get rid of clothe and other unnecessary elements that just fill space.
Despite of that, you should agree with me that you wouldn’t know what to do if your hard drive gets lost or stolen (I’ve heard some dramatic cases on this matter). After 10 years of experience, after many projects here and there, many documents and music (yes, I do still have mp3 music) I’ve gather 1 Tb (one with twelve zeros) of data. That without considering the information on Dropbox, Gmail and Spotify. I hopefully someday will read some not-yet-open documents.
Those who understand this drama would know the great effort required to sort so much info out. You run out of folder’s names and creativity sprout, you realized that long names would eventually lead to no-saving conditions, you learn that there’s always a folder were you collect everything you don’t know which other place to put it and that you’ll never learn to back up your data.
CAN WE REALLY MANAGE OUR INFORMATION?
In some matter, we want to keep on having control of our valuable information. We naively believe that with properly sort-out folders, we will find the data needed when required.
We deal with so much information that putting it in order is not an easy task. But How much information do we have? Is one terabyte really that much information? To put things in context, you should know that Facebook produces 350 GB every minute, which means that my great-effort-to-fill hard drive would end up with no empty space after just 3 minutes.
We daily generate such an outstanding amount of information in the world that it doesn’t make sense any effort to control it. What we really need is to put all the content in context, aligned with our own personal experiences and find sense. To join the dots.
WHAT IS THE VALUE OF YOUR INFO?
If we think about our info, it may represent more a feeling than a tangible value.
If we are teaching or making conferences, we could turn our knowledge into money and self-satisfaction, contributing with education to those who can assume the cost. But, according with the experts in education, one of the biggest responsables for people to quit studying is resources scarcity; so, this way we do generate knowledge, but just to those with resources.
Besides that, most people is not in that situation; not teaching nor conferencing but silently learning and generating knowledge. It may refer to potentially valuable information that if share properly may truly produce benefits.
But, the truth is that for most of us, sharing is not easy. Who would have not come up with that teacher who do not want to share his slides since that is “his information” and it has been a really hard work to produce it, or maybe with an experienced colleague who does not want to share his “secret sauce” since that is what makes him so special.
And I have not mentioned mistakes yet. That is a taboo. There is no way to admit a mistake, that would be a public suicide against ourselves and our expectations to succeed in the industry.
And in the end, we get into a vicious circle where people have things to tell and own relevant information but do not find value in sharing what they know because they are in fear of plagiarism and no acknowledgement. This fact could not only end up frustrating real learning experiences and thus having the opportunity to avoid “tripping twice over the same stone”, but also harm future entrepreneurship and innovations, loosing the chance to grow as an industry; as a person.
WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?
Probably there is a social-educative issue behind that leads us to this conduct. Society raises us to behave this way. When you leave university and begin to work, you meet people who behaves the same way and while developing your career you decide to study a course and you realize that everything looks much simpler in class than in real life since when implementing that knowledge on site you come up with brain-racking problems but also with creative solutions that many times unfortunately goes to waste and then, as time goes by, you turn out to be that great professional tailor-made by society, ready to raised new professional as casted in the same mould as you.
We have been mislead. They have made us believe that things work that way.
But, what could happen if we will find the path to express ourselves freely and without prejudices, where we would not only win for the mere fact of jointly reflecting and learning but also for contributing transcendently and deeply with the society and the industry; where we recognize ourselves as people and would understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process and that hides an opportunity behind it? What would happen if we would build an environment where we could create real value from all of our Gigabytes and knowledge stocked; making sense and creating purpose out of it?
Is this a utopia? What do you think?
